The internet has a long memory…think before you post

Paul Harrison was quoted in an article by Charlotte Gill in the Daily Mail on the 4th April, highlighting why we should all be mindful of what we post online.   You can no longer treat your online communications as “private conversations” because online everything you say is published and potentially broadcast to thousands.

The full article is available here: One click to disaster: Ever moaned about work on Facebook? Or joked about your boss? It could end in a P45…

Paul believes employees need to be given strict guidelines as to what people can and can’t say on Facebook: ‘Unless firms are explicit about how their staff use social networks, it’s unfair for people who are not internet gurus. Facebook’s privacy settings are longer than the U.S. Constitution.’

More and more employers are using what’s said online in their recruitment decisions.  Don Leslie, from recruitment agency Beament Leslie Thomas was also quoted in the article, ‘People post things that maybe they shouldn’t, even years before they apply for the job but find that it’s difficult to erase from the internet. If they’re savvy they can block access to what people see on Facebook and other sites. But while some are savvy, some aren’t.’

Paul was also interviewed by BBC Radio on this subject. The interview can be heard from 17.30 minutes into the broadcast:

The Social Company, and the impact for Employer Brands and Social Media

Paul Harrison, Managing Partner of social media strategy house Carve Consulting keynoted at the SMART Recruiter conference in September 2010, presenting what it means to be a “Social Company” and what this means for employer brands and in house recruiters. This is the presentation looking at everything from Glassdoor.com and employer reviews, to Employee Advocacy and new pure-plays such as BranchOut for Facebook.

Reputation 2.0 and Employers

As you know,  at Carve we believe that review and ranking platforms  - that already dominate the travel ( think TripAdvisor.com ) and ents / eating ( for example Yelp.com ) sectors - are coming in a big way to every sector you can think of.

Driven by OAuth, opengraph, smart phones,   increased web connectively and so on, soon we wouldn’t think of using a particular state agent, hairdresser ( or consulting firm, natch) without consulting  “the crowd”  ( strangers, think of those trusted TripAdvisor reviews ) and “the entourage in our pocket” ( peers, work colleagues, friends, family ).

One of major sectors in which we work is Corporate Social Recruiting, and I am amazed by how few employers of scale are aware of developments in this area. One of the cutest that plays to my mind is Glassdoor.com based on the “give and get given” concept : if you want to see how much you could earn as an analyst with JP Morgan, you’re asked to outline how much you earn where you work at UBS.  Similarly, if you want to read a review,  you’re asked to write one. And now they’ve launched workplace photos - a strangely compelling view “from the inside”.

So  - one to watch.  Below a cute little embed widget showing reviews / salaries / interview feedback of Carve client Yell.

Tags: , , , ,

Prompted by the good people at Chinwag, we are now recruiting our very own twintern for the Summer. Graduates,  start sending your CVs to Adelaide@carveconsulting.com . We can’t wait to have the next social media expert on board for a few weeks!

Here is what our offer looks like:

You are passionate about all things social media, and are actively participating in a wide variety of web 2.0 activities such as blogging, social bookmarking, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. You would like to learn how to translate your passion into coherent and cutting-edge strategies for corporate organisations.

Carve Consulting is a digital engagement practice specialising in Corporate Social Networks, Online PR, Social Media Monitoring and Search Engine Marketing. With offices in the UK and Australia, the practice has developed corporate social networking strategies, social media marketing and social recruiting programmes for a range of private, public and not-for-profit organisations, including VisitBritain, Yell Adworks, The Audit Commission, Fairtrade, Wine Australia, Hays, ANZ Bank, and the NHS.  The practice offers strategy, advisory, research, training and managed services.

We can offer you a two month-internship in July and August where you’ll be thrown into the deep end to work on accounts with our consultants. Your day-to-day tasks will vary but will definitely include the following at some point:

-    Account management (including “whatever needs to be done to service the accounts”)
-    Client training
-    Client research
-    Report writing
-    Proactively participating in social media events

Our ideal intern looks a bit like this:
-    Passionate about social media with an appetite to learn
-    Up to date web 2.0 industry knowledge
-    Exceptional traditional writing and grammatical skills
-    Excellent verbal communication skills with ability to present  complex ideas clearly
-    Attention to detail and outstanding organisation skills
-    Ability to work to tight deadlines and be calm under pressure

We can’t offer you a full salary but will cover your travel and lunch expenses, as well as a discretionary bonus at the end of the internship. We are currently looking at expanding so there is potentially scope for developing this internship into a permanent paid position.

I look forward to hearing from you!
